I think the biggest challenge with the (UK) industry at least is the calibre of people in the industry. As a 20+ years practitioner there seems to be a greater ambundance of 'average research/insight professionals' than there ever has been. Todays generation seems to lack 'the touch' or connection with the end user and no longer seems to ask the right questions

Thanks for the mention, Simon. The focus of Conversition has been purely from the research side of things. We are all researchers who have solid backgrounds and training in research. Our focus is building research products that listen to internet chatter, which can in turn complement products that listen to survey responses. It can really broaden the viewpoint of research results.

Tom, thanks for the follow up. I am thinking primarily about web analytics - one company that has me excited in this arena is Conversition. They have brought the discipline of research to web analytics in a very powerful way.

I don't think I can disclose the name of the company that did its segmentation using web analytics - but it was a pharma company!

Simon & Robert,Good interview.

Simon, I agree with you on commoditization of traditional market research. While a bit trite perhaps, nothing wrong with using "Next Generation", I do it all the time ;) I think it's the best term we currently have.

Can you elaborate a little more on how you define the analytics referenced in the discussion about VC investments? Specifically what kind of analytics?

Also, what company was it that did their segmentation from web analytics and social media monitoring?

Finally, curious which are some of the companies are you referring to that "fascinate me and have really brought together research skills with web analytics skills"?
